Electrical System Reliability Work Underway in Brewer

Release Date:  11-30-2021

Brewer, Maine- Versant Power crews are working to increase customer reliability of service to area customers with new equipment in Brewer.

Crews have installed remote-operated devices in strategic locations that directly communicate the location of an issue on the line to a central computer system. After the location is determined, the area can be isolated, and crews can work to make outage repairs in less time with fewer people affected.

After line workers replaced existing poles with taller poles to better transmit radio frequencies and completed necessary line work, they installed the new communication devices.  The devices connect to all three substations in Brewer, where equipment was also modernized to meet the technology needs of the new system.

“The next step in the process is testing the communication equipment,” said Versant Power Superintendent of Line and Meter Operations Ryan Fysh. “Our crews and an outside engineering team will be testing the devices in mid-December, and upon completion, the equipment will be in service and help us pinpoint outages more quickly and efficiently.”

Work is continuing on Parkway South, Wilson Street and South Main Street.  The project began in June and is intended to be complete by the end of the year. We appreciate customers’ patience while we work to improve the reliability of your service.
