Bangor and Presque Isle, ME - Versant Power will replace over 20 miles of bare wire with covered conductor in 2025. Covered conductor is a type of wire wrapped in an insulated material that makes it more resistant when trees and branches contact the line, helping to prevent faults and outages. “The number one cause of outages in our service territory is trees and branches. Maine is the most forested state in the nation,” said Tyler Stanley, Program Manager, T&D System Planning at Versant Power. “This covered conductor helps us mitigate those outages and provide better reliability to our customers.” Here are some of the projects taking place in our service territory throughout 2025: - Blue Hill and Brooklin: Crews are currently replacing over four miles of existing conductor with covered conductor along Route 175, also known as Falls Bridge Road.
- Trenton: Nearly three miles of copper wire will be replaced with covered conductor alongside Oak Point Road. This project will start in late summer.
- Hancock: Versant Power will replace about two miles of existing conductor with covered conductor on Point Road this fall.
- Millinocket: One mile of bare wire will be replaced with covered conductor this summer.
Brownville, Cedar Lake TWP, and Deer Isle are other towns where customers will benefit from wire upgrades this year. Last year, Versant Power replaced 23 miles of bare wire with a covered wire as part of its commitment to deliver safe and reliable power to customers in eastern and northern Maine.
